(Sri Aurobindo:) “The psychic being is one’s own individual soul-being.”[1]
(Sri Aurobindo:) “When the psychic being awakens you grow conscious of your own soul; you know your Self. And you no longer commit the mistake of identifying yourself with the mental or with the vital being. You do not mistake them for the soul.”[2]
(Mother:) “The psychic is the being organised by the divine Presence.”[3]
(Mother:) “The psychic being is not a presence only, but a portion, a part of the manifested divine, the manifestation of the Immutable in the existence.”[4]
(Mother:) “It acts by an influence, by sending its feelers, or else spreading its antennas to receive the vibrations, the true vibrations, from the part that collaborates and works in unison with the perfect harmony, to be in agreement with it and to be guided by it.
The work of the psychic being is very subtle, very plastic, as if unexpected and unnoticed; it is as if all the parts of the being merge and dissolve in the beatitude of its presence, in the immutable truth that it represents. And then, in this state, there is no division in the parts of the being: everything obeys a central law, it s that of the psychic being. It is then that the psychic being comes in front and governs the person or the personality which is united in his psychic. By the inner contact the whole aspect of life changes, and his attitude towards himself and all those around him is a perpetual understanding in a harmony and a collaboration without restraint and without clashes or constraint because he knows already what the others want and ask for.
In this contact he feels a liberty and a vastness, a joy and a peace, a force and a power, a divine solicitude in the embrace of an all-conquering power to overcome and surmount all the difficulties that life brings. It is evident that the psychic being is all-powerful, master of all circumstances, knows everything and is aware of everything, and at the same time is full of compassion, full of love, full of peace and filled with humility; it does not impose itself at all, does not force its way, never does anything with violence, neither as a creation nor in the human ways. But enduring patiently all the consequences, all the so-called human revolts with a tolerance and a magnanimity of the worlds beyond, it completes its work.”[5]
(Mother:) “Ultimately it becomes a completely conscious individual being, master of itself and moved exclusively by the divine Will. That is to say, an individual expression of the Supreme. This is what we call the ‘psychic being’.
Generally speaking, those who practice yoga have either a fully developed, independent psychic being which has taken birth again to do the Divine's work, or else a psychic being in its last incarnation wanting to complete its development and realize itself.
This is what aspires, this is what has the contact.
So, when you're told “become conscious of your psychic being”, it's for the being formed by external Nature to contact the divine Presence through the psychic being. Then the psychic takes charge of the whole being; in fact, it is the inner Guide.... Well, when I was a little child, this ‘person’ (which wasn't a person, but an expression of a certain consciousness and will) was actually the psychic presence; there was something else behind, but that's a rather special case. And what happened to me happens to everyone whose psychic being has deliberately incarnated: the psychic being guides your life, and if you let it act freely, it arranges ALL circumstances – it's truly wonderful! ... I have seen – not only for myself but for so many people who also had conscious psychic beings – that everything is arranged with a view to ... not at all your personal egoistic satisfaction, but your ultimate progress and realization. And all circumstances of life, even those you call ‘disastrous’, are there to lead you where you have to go as swiftly as possible.”[6]
(Amal Kiran:) “Many people have tried to give an idea of what the soul or, as Sri Aurobindo puts it, the psychic being, is like. He has himself quoted Matthew Arnold's words – ‘sweetness and light’ – to convey the characteristics of the psychic being. And indeed they are quite apt because that sort of thing you do feel – the sweetness in the experience is of a bliss which has no cause; a self-existent bliss is there. It is not dependent on persons, occasions, circumstances, objects. To be there, deep within, to feel oneself there is to be perennially, and I might even say unbearably, happy. The light also is present, because some kind of natural truth-feeling is experienced, which guides you all the time. That is the positive side of the psychic being. On the negative side, in telling you what one does not do when one has some sort of psychic opening, I may hazard a punning paradox. First, I may say that one is not depressed, one does not bewail one's lot any more; secondly, one does not rebel, either against the Divine or against human beings. So I might state: “When you are psychic you neither sigh nor kick!” (laughter)”[7]
- “(Nirodbaran:) Sometimes one feels a sort of love for everybody; though the feeling lasts only for a few seconds, it gives a great joy.
(Sri Aurobindo:) That is a wave from the psychic.”[8]
