Avatars

(Mother:) “To believe or not to believe in the possibility of avatarhood can make no difference to the bare fact. If God chooses to manifest in a human body I do not see how any human thought, approval or disapproval can affect in the least His decision; and if He takes birth in a body, the denial of men cannot prevent the fact from being a fact. So what is there to get excited about.”

(Sri Aurobindo to disciple, 1932:) “As for the Mother and myself, we have had to try all ways, follow all methods, to surmount mountains of difficulties, a far heavier burden to bear than you or anybody else in this Asram or outside, far more difficult conditions, battles to fight, wounds to endure, ways to cleave through impenetrable morass and desert and forest, hostile masses to conquer, a work such as I am certain none else had to do before us. For the Leader of the Way in a work like ours has not only to bring down and represent and embody the Divine, but to represent too the ascending element in humanity and to bear the burden of humanity to the full and experience not in a mere play or līlā but in grim earnest all the obstruction, difficulty, opposition, baffled and hampered and only slowly victorious labour which are possible on the Path. But it is not necessary nor tolerable that all that should be repeated over again to the full in the experience of others. It is because we have the complete experience that we can show a straighter and easier road to others — if they will only consent to take it. It is because of our experience won at a tremendous price that we can urge upon you and others, “Take the psychic attitude; follow the straight sunlit path, with the Divine openly or secretly upbearing you — if secretly, he will yet show himself in good time, — do not insist on the hard, hampered, roundabout and difficult journey.” ”

(Mother to Mona Sarkar:) “It is only with our arrival on the scene that vaster and truer horizons have opened up by a mysterious alchemy. Anyway, it was decreed that the manifestation of the two of us would bring in a new phase in the terrestrial existence, a new step in the human consciousness hitherto unknown to man. It is a new world which will be created so that man can live a life moulded and guided from within by the Divine – the beginning of a new phase, a divine life in a divine body.
         The earth, in spite of its resistance, will witness so sudden a reversal that it will be astounded and at the same time surprised by the pressure of the force of transformation, by the circumstances, that men will be compelled to collaborate with this New Consciousness, and the atmosphere will be charged by this transforming power and man will have no other choice but to submit himself to this higher law and follow the decree ordained from above.”

(Mother to Satprem, 1968:) “There are long, long, very long periods during which things are prepared; there is, afterwards, a very long, very long period during which things develop, organize, settle and bear consequences; but between this and that, there is a moment when things are done, when they happen. It's not always very long (sometimes it is, at other times it's very brief), but that's when something happens. And that ‘something’ is what will give the world a new development. Well, we are just — as it happens, we are just at such a moment. Which means that if we are (people, most of the time, are blind), if we aren't blind, if our eyes are open, we WILL SEE, we will see things.”

(Sri Aurobindo, 1925:) “You cannot expect work from the Avatar in the same way as from all men. He can work directly upon universal forces and thus work in humanity without seemingly doing anything and nobody can know what work he has done.”
