1980
(Amrit:) “On 10th November 1980, the Auroville Ordinance was announced after being passed by the Indian Parliament, placing the project directly under the temporary administration of the Government of India. On this very day in the evening, a miraculously beautiful apparition pervaded the Auroville landscape. In a visibly vivid way, some of us witnessed a soft salmon-pink light, the color signifying ‘Beauty of Supramental Love’... radiating from the land, plants and trees. … Unlike the sunset casting its multicolored rainbow onto the sky, the surrounding space and everything in it seemed suffused and saturated uniformly by this salmon-pink luminescence – a sanctuary of light assuming concrete form. This manner of miraculously materialized light I had never seen before, nor have viewed since.”[1]
(Amrit:) “Just prior to the passing of the Auroville Ordinance, in apparent response to a statement by Satprem that books were only mental creations, and by implication useless, his followers gathered in Aspiration to disband the Auroville Library and dispense with the books so painstakingly collected and donated by countless people of goodwill throughout the world. … They celebrated the destruction of the books either burned in piles or distributed outside Auroville. The only literature of note to be retained were comic books... To my despair, I had just returned to the Library a few erudite books by Sir John Woodrooffe, one of the most eminent authorities on the Tantra.”[2]
(Amrit:) “Immediately following the Ordinance, the SAS instituted a court case challenging it, which reached the Indian Supreme Court. Even though appointed as Head Administrator of Auroville, Mr. Nigam was rarely in residence, with Mr. Ojha of the IPS (Indian Police Service) serving as Acting Administrator. Curiously interesting because of contradictions in personality, Ojha exuded an air of charming arrogance, conscious of authority and standing, yet at the same time imbued with the tender heart of a typical Indian.”[3]
