(Sri Aurobindo on himself:) “Imprisonment —
Thrice prosecuted;

  • first for sedition and acquitted
  • then in 1908 along with his brother Barindra, (one of the chief leaders of the revolutionary movement) on a charge of conspiracy to wage war against the established Government. Acquitted after a year’s detention as an under-trial prisoner, mostly in a solitary cell.
  • last, in his absence in 1910, for sedition. This case also failed on appeal.”[1]

(Peter Heehs:) “The Alipore Bomb Conspiracy Trial was regarded by contemporaries as a landmark in at least three respects. The event that brought it about was “the first occasion in which an Indian had used this product of modern science [the bomb] with murderous effect”; the men who plotted the attack constituted “the first criminal conspiracy of any magnitude that the revolutionary party started”; and the resulting trial was “the first State Trial of any magnitude in India”.”[2]
