Savitri Study Circle

Objective

Detailed group study of Sri Aurobindo’s revelatory epic poem Savitri : a legend and a symbol. The aim is to deepen understanding and appreciation of the poetic language of Sri Aurobindo’s masterpiece, as well as of its message, which the Mother has referred to as ‘the supreme revelation of Sri Aurobindo’s vision’.

Description of project

The Study Circle was initiated on November 24, 1994 and has continued meeting ever since. In 2013 the 4th cycle of study was initiated, starting again at the beginning of the book. The full cycle of study covers about 6 years, so we expect the current cycle to continue until 2018-19.

During the 2013-14 year 52 weekly sessions of one and a half hours each were held at Savitri Bhavan, in which groups of about 25-30 people participated. While a core group of people participated regularly throughout the year, in addition other individuals visiting the area participated in a few sessions depending on the length of their stay.

In the course of the year, the study covered the first 10 cantos of Book Two of the poem (pages 95 to 259); about 3 pages were closely studied in each session.

Audio recordings were made of all the sessions, and these are being distributed on request to interested people elsewhere. Transcripts of the sessions are also being prepared, with the idea of future publication.

Outcomes

About 20 Aurovilians deepened their understanding of Sri Aurobindo’s vision, and became more confident in understanding the language and imagery of the poem, so that they could grasp some of its deep meaning independently.

Remarks

This Study Circle is the core activity of Savitri Bhavan, from which all the other activities have developed, and it continues to attract increasing interest from Savitri-readers around the world.
