Volley Ball Competition
The Auroville Volley Ball sports group conducts an annual volley ball tournament for all the teams from Auroville, Outreach Schools and from the surrounding village of Auroville. SAIIER through the Auroville Sports Resource Centre gives contribution to conduct this tournament every year. This year we received Rs. 18,000 in order to conduct the tournament, which was held on November 10 and 11, 2012.
Earlier this year the girls teams had come forward requesting to be part of the volley ball tournament, which previously included only men's and boy's teams. So we gave some training for the girls teams before the tournament, and finally they took part. The girls teams were excited and requested to be included every year in the future.
Organizing the tournament involved: cleaning the grounds; distributing invitations to all the teams from surrounding villages; announcing in News & Notes; making the time schedule; providing some snacks and mineral water for all the players; buying uniforms, new balls and net; arrange chairs for the visitors and players.
We had to do some extra fundraising and so appealed to some individuals and Auroville units. We raised Rs. 19,500 from 10 donors. (We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the donors.)
A total of 32 boys team participated in the competition: Dehashakti Sports Club, NESS, Kuilapalayam, Edayanchavady, Bommayarpalayam, Chinnakottapuppam Mudaliyarchavadi, Perriya Mudaliyarchavadi, Kottakarai, Alankuppam, Moratandi, Mathur, Pillichavady, Kalapet, Nadukuppam, Puthurai, Kootroad, Ganagachettikulam, Annainagar, Setinagar, Killzpet, Rayapudupakkam, Apprampet, Kunimadu, Pudupadu, Thalapuram, Sanjeevganar, and Durvai.
4 girls teams were formed and given the names “Star”, “Cloud”, “Moon”, and “Rainbow/Dehashakti”.
210 players took part in the competition for this year. Prizes were awarded to the winners, motivating participants to play their best and continue improving. The tournament brought all the volley ball sports players from surrounding villages together, showing the interest in this game which is played everywhere in the world.
