How to prolong Lithium-Ion (Li-ion) battery life

Most popular laptop brands use Lithium-Ion batteries. Here is a compilation from the Net with my own Dos and Don’ts. The aim is to help you understand the basics of these batteries and how to get the most out of it.

A lithium-ion battery provides 300-500 full discharge/charge cycles. The battery prefers a partial rather than a full discharge. Frequent full discharges should be avoided if possible. Instead, charge the battery more often or use a high capacity battery to avoid full discharge. There is no concern of memory* when applying unscheduled charges. For more information on ‘memory effect of batteries’ read the foot note. Although lithium-ion is memory-free in terms of performance deterioration, batteries with fuel gauges (capacity indicator) exhibit what engineers refer to as "digital memory". Here is the reason: Short discharges with subsequent recharges do not provide the periodic calibration needed to synchronize the fuel gauge with the battery's state-of-charge. A deliberate full discharge and recharge every 30 charges corrects this problem. Letting the battery run down to the cut-off point in the equipment will do this. If ignored, the fuel gauge will become increasingly less accurate.

Apart from regular use there also the issue of aging of lithium-ion batteries. A lithium-ion battery in moderate use typically lasts between 2-3 years. The capacity loss occurs due to increased internal resistance caused by oxidation. Eventually, the cell resistance reaches a point where the pack can no longer deliver the stored energy although the battery may still have ample charge. The service life of the battery also depends on the operating temperature. Prolonged extreme operating conditions will eventually shorten the life of the battery.

Dos and Don’ts

Avoid frequent full discharge of battery.

A full discharge approx. every 30 charges is recommended. In simple terms drain the battery fully once every month. If you have frequent power cuts and the battery gets used regularly then this might not apply to you. Of course, you are using up the charge cycles by using the battery in this manner.

If you have a choice of using grid /mains power, then use it. It will avoid discharging the battery unnecessarily.

Avoid using your laptop while placed on cushions or mattresses. This might end up blocking the cooling inlets / outlets and overheat the machine subjecting your battery to high temperatures. Apart from that, repeated excessively hot operating temperatures may result in permanent damage to the processor.

  • Memory effect, also known as lazy battery effect or battery memory, is an effect observed in Nickel-Cadmium (NiCd) rechargeable batteries that cause them to hold less charge. It describes one very specific situation in which certain NiCd batteries gradually lose their maximum energy capacity if they are repeatedly recharged after being only partially discharged. The battery appears to "remember" the smaller capacity.
