Maude Pickett Smith, teacher, librarian and social worker before coming to India, was a disciple in the Sri Aurobindo Ashram starting in 1953. She was a keeper of the stock of Ashram publications as well as co-editor of =1. Successful in the miracle of multiplying herself into numerous personalities, she at the same time kept accounts, proofread, paid and 'mothered' the employees, revised manuscripts, ordered supplies, looked after house maintenance and garden, handled the correspondence, and saw it to that each subscriber got his copy. "Without all these Maudes there would be no Equals One." [1]
