Spam
When dealing with spam several filter systems are in use.
- Spam filters on the email server are used to eliminate mail before it even reaches you
- Spam filters are used by your email software
- Spam filters are used by you anti-virus/anti-spyware software (on WIndows mainly)
Spam filters on the email server
When spam is send by a spammer thousands, sometimes ten thousands of mails are sent in one go! The email service providers built a scanning system and eliminate this type of mails as much as they can before they start their journey around the globe. Most of those clearly defined spam mail never reach any mailbox :-) But there is a grey area where it is not clear whether a mail is spam or not. In our words it is possible spam. Since the server doesn't know it sends you the mail but ask for your atention and participation.
In such a case you receive messages flagged as "– Possible Spam – xxxx" In case the mail was not Spam please forward the message to: notspam@auroville.org.in The next time then when you receive a message from this sender it will be classified correctly.
Equally, if you receive a message, which is SPAM, then please forward this message to: spam@auroville.org.in The spam filtering system then will add the sender details to its data base and hopefully the next time the message gets trapped.
Note:
It might be helpful to add the above detailed email addresses to your address book for future reference.
| Emails from Facebook and Paypal are favorite spam mails. The spam detection level for those emails are lowered becasue some users didn't receive their legitimate Facebook and Paypal emails. However, the consequence of lowering the spam filter is that it is more likely that Facebook and Paypal spam and phishing mails come to your email box. Please be extra careful when you receive such mails. |
Spam filters are used by your email software
Email software (email clients) like Thunderbird, Outlook and others have build-in spam filters. They provide you with lots of options. Just make sure that when you receive an email from the auroville.org.in server marked as possible spam to tell your local filter as well whether this mail is spam or no.

Security
Your email account is interesting for people to send out spam. The chances that somebody is interested in your mail is rather low. To get into your account all the spammer needs is your login and your password. That's why you sometimes receive fake emails asking for user name and pasword.
| Auromail will never ever ask you by email for your password! There will be no exception now or in future. Any email you receive attempting to get your username and password is an attempt to misuse your email account. If you want to help forward this type of emails immediately to sysop@auroville.org.in so that action can be taken. |
What is a good password?
Here are some tip and tricks around passwords:
- PaSsWoRds arE cAsE seNsiTive.
- Don't use language specific letters like ä ñ . These letters are not available on keyboards all over the world.
- Passwords like "auroville", "mother", "surrender", "truth", "light" are weak as they are so-called dictionary words. Any English dictionary can be (and is used) in an automated process to break your password. This holds true for any language.
- Passwords like "AuR0ville55" and "6mi1bstS" are strong and discourage crackers to break into your mailbox.Use capital, small letters and numbers. You can build a pssword from a sentence like "Six monkeys in one boat sail to Sumatra" taking the first letters: 6mi1bstS
Tip: Take care of the CAPS key when you log in.
