The asteroids or planetoids, those innumerable small heavenly bodies orbiting the sun between Mars and Jupiter, stand in our inner heaven for the muses, the goddesses of the

of man. From music to embroidery, from sculpture to cooking, from painting to gardening, they preside over the mysterious creative possibilities of man and urge him to produce the good, the beautiful and the superb in all his cultural activities.

Their influence comes into our waking awareness as a brilliant flash of

or as a constant guidance to those who are open to these powers. No real

is possible without them; at the same time no dedicated disciple of the arts is left without their guidance provided he exercises his artistic gifts tirelessly. Let us not forget that the muses with their gifts of intuition and mastery may become our constant companions. Sri Aurobindo reminds us that art in its highest forms is worship of the divine and a form of beatitude, and that “yoga is skill in works”[1].

Our symbol is Pegasus, the winged horse of the inspired artist “Leaping out of a splendour-trance and haze”[2].
